Food waste makes up the largest fraction of disposed waste in the US. In 2017 alone, 41 million tons of food waste was generated and, of that disposed food waste, only 6% was composted (US EPA Advancing Sustainable Materials Management: 2017 Fact Sheet).

At Southface, food waste accounts for a more than 50% of our generated waste - up to 700 lbs. per month. By composting, Southface is able to divert that food waste away from landfills and, instead, convert that waste into healthy, nutrient-rich, organic soil used by both local farmers and in our own vegetable garden.
